news at 6:00. >> talks hit a snag in washington with president obama and house speaker john been unable to reach a deal. senate leaders stepped in to get a compromise before tomorrow's deadline. today they announced they have hit a wall. >> even if lawmakers are not running out of ideas, they are running out of time. the prospects of a fiscal cliff plunge look closer than ever today when senate talks ground to a standstill. >> i am willing to get this done. i needed dance partner. >> republicans demanded social security cuts. democrats called that a deal killer. the gop to get off the table. the deadline is monday at midnight. if no deal, taxes go up on nine out of 10 americans.

potentially catastrophic spending cuts start kicking in. lawmakers spent much of the day behind closed doors plotting strategy. president obama blamed the impasse on republicans. >> the way they are behaving is there on the priority is making sure the tax breaks for the wealthiest americans are protected. >> on sunday, the president talked about his plan b. he wants the senate to vote on extending tax cuts to everyone but the rich. >> if the republicans baca, middle-class taxes will go a. >> a political showdown with only one certainty, tomorrow night's deadline. the president has a plan c, reversing the effects of the cliff on january 4 when the new congress is in town. >> if america does fall off the fiscal cliff, maryland would be

hit hard. hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs lost. sarah sampson continue our coverage. >> maryland has very strong ties to the federal government. lots of federal workers and businesses that rely on the federal workers. all of them are keeping a close eye on negotiations. according to a report earlier this year by the state department of legislative services, maryland stands to lose 53,000 jobs in 2013 if lawmakers cannot come to an agreement. the state will also lose tax revenue estimated at about $260 million for 2013. if the cuts go through, the state will lose $117 million in federal funding for 2013. that is money the state has already factored into its budget. >> it is gone to affect social

service programs -- it is going to affect social service programs as well as some of our defense contractors in maryland. it is going to adversely impact our low income households as well as some of our higher and households. >> the first thing you will notice is in your paycheck. the federal income taxes will go up. if lawmakers to come to an agreement, they are likely to leave it that way. sarah sampson, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the ravens game was kind of like the iowa caucus of the regular season. everybody gets to participate. it does not matter if you lose. you learn in the process. >> neither team could improve their playoff position.

cincinnati chose to place starters for much of the game. the ravens nearly won the game in cincinnati. in the first quarter, anthony allen, a first touchdown of his career. we saw a bunch of taylor today. he is swift with the feet. the ravens have the 14-13 lead. now trailing 16-14. taylor does not have much height. dunlop has plenty. that would be the play of the game. the ravens fall 23-17. the ravens will host a playoff game this coming weekend. we know it will be the colts' coming to town. we just do not know when. more coming up in sports.

>> now we want to get a first look at the forecast. >> it was windy and cold today. things are settling down. the wind will gust close to 25 or 30. that will put the wind chill in the low 20's. look for a quiet day tomorrow. there could be some showers around new year's eve and new year's day. we will talk about that in a few minutes. >> the sheriff's office is searching for a suspect they say shot and wounded his sister. police say he was fighting with his family late last night. they say he pulled out a gun and shot through the front door hitting his sister. she is being treated at the hospital. police say he should be considered armed and dangerous. fire investigators are searching for the cause of a fire at a nursing home.

we're told it was a small fire that started around 11:00 this morning in a laundry room. the fire was quickly put out. no injuries were reported. several people were displaced. city agencies are working to find shelter for those residents. still ahead, and a reduction, a bomb, and an attempted bank robbery. on thin ice. there was more than just one rescue on christmas day. the full story when we come back.

police lieutenant was one of two firefighters and gunned down by an excon who lured them into a deadly ambush. a woman was kidnapped to help propagate. police say the bank employee was inducted friday night and held overnight with an explosive device around her neck. saturday morning, a suspect took her to the bank to try to rob. police responded when an alarm went off. the rescue the woman. the device turned out to be fake. the suspect got away. an amazing rescue at a frozen lake in california all caught on tape. robert has the story. >> the video camera she got is a christmas present captured it all. christmas day, a man came down a hill and fell through the thin ice of jackson lake. those who tried to save him fell into the freezing water.

>> it turned into a total disaster. people falling in trying to save him and in themselves. >> that is the voice of her husband. >> by through the rope out. it was about 7 feet short of getting to him. we noticed he did not know how to swim. we observed him go under three times. >> more people went on to the fragile ice, including children. then another attempt. the man who tried to save him as well. inner tubes and selds. finally, rope to pull them to shore. >> it does not get cold enough for anyone to be on the ice. they are fortunate everybody came out alive. it was hard to watch. >> still ahead on 11 news, the

in 1990. we have some snow flurries this morning. if you were up early, he might have seen snow flurries in your neighborhood. the skies had cleared. the wind will diminish. the temperatures are going to drop quickly. we will end up in the low 20's in many neighborhoods. it is still breezy right now 18 miles an hour gusts at the airport. that puts the wind chill in the lower end of the 20's. you will want to dress for the wind chill. the actual temperatures will give in to the low 20's early tomorrow morning. right now, temperatures are in the low 30's. let's see what is going to happen. we will start at 7:30 in the morning tomorrow. tomorrow will be quiet. we do not expect any precipitation. new year's eve, there will be an impulse coming through.

this is right at midnight. this model is forecasting sprinkles. there is a chance we could see a shower new year's eve. new year's day, there will be a stronger system passing south. some models get baltimore into the precipitation. we will put a chance in four rain or snow on new year's day. the forecast tonight, mostly clear and cold. temperatures will drop into the low 20's. tomorrow, in extra sunshine and cause. the high temperature between 40 and 45. the 7-day forecast taking us into the new year. a slight chance for a shower on new year's eve and new year's day. it does not look like a big deal. another chance on thursday. things will be quiet and cold going into the weekend. >> it had its moments. it was an interesting chance to watch the backups play the game.

he set it up himself. the ravens ran the ball so well that play action did work to get outside. he walks to the end zone for the touchdown. ravens have the 14-13 lead. tucker has not done this much this year. only his third miss of the season. it was a big point in the game. the ravens are trailing by two. the ravens of 23-17. they will face the indianapolis colts next weekend in baltimore. >> we're looking forward to playing them. they are a very good team. they have a great young quarterback. they won today. you can tell what they are all about. they are a very good football team. >> we just do not know when.
